Voters going to polling locations on this May 6th for the primary will need to remember to bring a valid form of Ohio identification. Polls close at 7:30pm.

No candidates are on this year’s primary ballot due to no contested races.

But there are few local issues:

~ Issue 10: New Philadelphia – 5.9-mil bond and a 1-mil tax levy. For the construction of a new K-6th grade elementary and a 7-12 grade middle/high school. The bond issue and school district would fund 45 percent of the construction costs, while the state would fund 55 percent of the roughly $146 million dollar cost. The elementary school would be built behind South School. The new middle-high school would be built behind Welty Middle School and the high school. An approving vote would cost New Philadelphia homeowners $242 per year for every $100,000 of property value.

~ Issue 11: Strasburg-Franklin Local School – 3.6-mil, 30-year bond. It would generate 10 million. This is for the school district to add turf to the football field and replace a nearly 30-year-old track. Plus, new baseball, softball, and band practice fields. The district might have to find a new home for the softball team anyway with the expansion of the waste management plant potentially cutting into the field at Strasburg Franklin Park.

~ Issue 6: Dover Township and Parral voters – Additional 1.5 mils tax levy to generate an extra $264,000 per year. The current levy, established over the past 30 year, brings in about $142,000. This amount falls short of the needs of the Dover Fire Department. If approved, the addition would cost Dover Township and Parral residents an extra $53 yearly for every $100,000 of home value.

Levy renewals are also up:

  • City of Uhrichsville for ambulance and fire equipment
  • Village of Bolivar for maintaining the village
  • Lawerence Township related to fire and EMS service
  • Warwick Township, including the Village of Tusky, has a replacement for ambulance and emergency services
  • Union Cemetery for operations and maintenance
  • Gnadenhutten Public Library for current expenses

There is also statewide Issue 2, which would authorize the state to issue bonds to finance local infrastructure initiatives dealing with roads, bridges, water systems, waste disposal, and other projects.
