Gwen Rummell Reporting –
As Independence Day approaches and families get ready for backyard barbecues, it is essential to prioritize grill safety.
Improper grill usage can cause grease fires and injuries, circumstances that are completely avoidable.
According to Captain Jim Sholtz with the New Philadelphia Fire Department, one of the main causes of grease fires is placement and lack of supervision.
“Whenever you are using your grill, it’s important to not use it inside your structure. We do have people who put it inside their garages and stuff, especially when it’s raining. If you do have some sort of a grease fire, which does happen, it now is going to threaten your structure.”
Keeping close watch on a grill can prevent most grease fires. In the event of a fire, it is recommended to have an abc extinguisher nearby.
As celebrations come to an end, it is important to properly empty the coals from the grill.
“Know that once you’re done, that those coals can burn quite some time – just sit there and smolder and you don’t even notice. If you want to be sure that they are completely out before you dispose of them, let them sit overnight before you then scoop them out.”
By following proper grill safety precautions, families can minimize the risk of accidents and focus on enjoying their Independence Day.
