The Tuscarawas County Board of Elections says polling locations will open on Tuesday for the primary at 6:30am.
Director David Johnson reminds voters of a few things to bring.
“Make sure that you have your driver’s license ready when you get up to the counter and every voter must say their name and their address, so when they ask you for it don’t give them a hard time because they’re just doing their job.”
He also notes to remember that poll workers are fellow neighbors.
“They’re helping us perform the election so be patient with them. They only do this twice a year and there’s a lot to remember.”
Johnson adds for those with a mail-in ballot to drop that off to the elections office by 7:30pm for it to count. Any ballots received after the polls closed will not be counted, per a new state law.
Overall, the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections expects a medium turnout for the May primary due to several local and statewide races. Voters will decide party nominees for positions including county auditor—where Republicans Brett Hillyer and Lisa Contini face off, with Democrat Joe Rinehart unopposed—and the 6th U.S. Congressional District, which has four Democrats and one Republican running. The Democratic primary for Ohio House District 51 features Amanda Fontana and Angie Hall, with the winner advancing to face incumbent Jodi Salvo. Statewide contested races include governor, U.S. senator, attorney general, secretary of state, and treasurer.
Issues on the ballot include New Philadelphia Schools are seeking a 1.5% earned‑income tax, while Dover Library, the Joint Union Cemetery, and the Village of Strasburg all have renewal levies. Newcomerstown is asking for a 0.5% income tax for road repairs, Tuscarawas is seeking an additional levy up to 2.4 mills for current expenses, and Mineral City is proposing a 1% income‑tax increase split between operations and streets. Auburn Township has two renewal levies for roads and fire/EMS, and Bucks Township is seeking an additional levy for street maintenance.
