An 18-year-old from Coshocton is in the Tuscarawas County jail for allegedly stealing a vehicle in Newcomerstown and leading police on a pursuit into Coshocton County late on Christmas Eve.

 The suspect, Austin Freetage, is being held on initial charges including resisting arrest, failure to comply with the order of an officer, and criminal damaging and endangering. 

Tuscarawas county sheriff’s call logs show that deputies were contacted at about 11:50 pm Tuesday and started pursuing the suspected vehicle on west State Street. 

Coshocton county sheriff’s officials say they were contacted to assist about five minutes later and joined the pursuit as it spanned a few roads in their county, reaching speeds of approximately 100 miles per hour. 

The driver eventually lost control around a curve and ran off with a passenger into a wooded area after crashing off the road. Both were apprehended however a short time later.

That passenger – also an 18-year-old male from Coshocton – was taken to the hospital for injuries sustained in the accident.
