A statewide effort is raising awareness to improve biking and pedestrian safety.

Ohio Department of Transportation Press Secretary Matt Bruning says this involves walkers and bikers, and concerns over a recent spike in crashes.

“After a peak in fatal bicycle and pedestrian crashes in 2021 these types of crash had been declining, but last year data shows that serious injury and fatal crashes have been trending upward. The top three contributing factors being failure to yield, improper crossing, and following too closely.”

The analysis also identified hotspot areas with the greatest concentration of these crashes, including Holmes County, Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, and Dayton.

“The effort includes reenforcing safe driving behaviors such as yielding and obeying the speed limit in areas with high activity, encouraging walkers and cyclists to stay alert and visible, and reminding all Ohioans that our road are shared spaces that require shared responsibility.”

Bruning notes that pedestrian crashes peak on Fridays between 6–8 PM, while bicycle crashes most often occur on Fridays between 3–4 PM.
