Mary Alice Reporting –

An annual remembrance day will take place the morning of Friday, March 8th.

The Gnadenhutten Museum is hosting the event that honors the memory of 96 Christian Delaware Native American killed on that day in 1782.

The 9am ceremony will be at the burial mound in Gnadenhutten Historical Park. The event will open with prayers and feature presentative from Native American tribes.

Gnadenhutten is Ohio’s oldest existing settlement, prospered until the outbreak of the Revolutionary War when the Indians were driven from their homes. In February 1782, they were allowed to return but on March 8, 1782, following a night of worship, men, women and children were massacred, and all of the cabins were set on fire by the Pennsylvania Militia.
