Construction is underway for a new health center at Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools.

The district received a Governor’s Appalachian Grant to cover the entire cost, says Superintendent Derek Varansky.

“A $2.28 million grant. “We wrote that grant with the Appalachian Children’s Coalition, along with a few other districts in our local area, Claymont participated in that as well as Brown Local. There’s a consortium of us working together to put this school-based health clinics in our communities to benefit our kids but our communities at large.”

The health clinic will be in the original high school. Varansky notes that renovations have begun.

“We are converting that building into administrative offices and just as a community center for our entire district. Took part of the old shop area and we’re converting about 26 hundred square foot of that space into this clinic. So, it’s near the football stadium with plenty of parking and handicap accessibility entrance.”

Operated by Aultman Hospital, the health space will be multi-use, serving as urgent care for students and primary care for residents, by appointment.

“For our community it will serve as a primary care facility. Our community will schedule appointments to come in. They will not be able to just be walk-in style.”

Completion will be by the end of August. The hope is to combine an opening with the district’s back-to-school bash.
