Ricky Roy Cox, age 73, of Uhrichsville, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus in Cleveland, following a lengthy illness.

Born March 24, 1949, in Dennison, Rick is the son of the late William L. and Mary Helen (Long) Cox.

After graduation from Claymont High School, Rick furthered his education at United Electronic Institute in Akron, Kent State University for 4 years and received his masters from Franciscan University. He began his teaching and coaching careers at Jewett-Scio High School, coaching boys’ basketball. He then was employed at Claymont City Schools as the physical education teacher, boys’ varsity basketball coach, varsity golf coach and eventually girls’ basketball coach.

Rick and his wife Sherrie loved traveling to watch their daughters compete collegiately. Their grandchildren’s sporting events brought them their greatest joy. Rick was a member of the First Christian Church. He was an avid sports fan and golfer.

In addition to his parents, Rick is preceded in death by his wife Nancy “Sherrie” Cox, who passed away December 21, 2019; his brother Bill Cox and a nephew Eric E. Cox.

Rick is survived by his daughters Natalie (Brian) Fockler and their sons, Aidan, Owen and Knox; Nicole (Scott) Shaw and their children Adam, Collin, Samuel and Lucy; Neeley (Jeremy) Davis and their daughter Elah; and Nanette Cox and her daughter Cole; great grandson Jackson Shaw; siblings Mark (Shari) Cox and Beth Ann (Michael) Kopp; sister-in-law Gay Cox and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Rick will be held at 6 p.m., on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at the “Pit”, the current Claymont Middle School, 215 E. 6th Street, Uhrichsville.  The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service from 4 to 6.

In honor of Rick, the former Bill Cox memorial scholarship will be renamed the Bill and Rick Cox Memorial Scholarship. It will be established and administered by the Claymont Foundation, P. O. Box 255, Dennison, Ohio, 44621.  Contributions may be made to the scholarship or Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 716 Commercial Ave. SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio, 44663.
