A river rescue near Bolivar had a fortunate ending Monday evening after a husband and wife became stranded in a canoe.
Bolivar Fire Lieutenant Kent Thompson says the couple — a 67-year-old man and 61-year-old woman — became disoriented and stopped along the river, unsure where they were after launching from a ramp between Bolivar and Beach City.
Their cell phone was pinged, allowing rescuers to locate them west of Interstate 77.
Firefighters from Bolivar, Erie Valley and Brewster responded, with Brewster crews reaching the couple first and bringing them safely to shore. Neither person was injured.
Thompson says it’s a reminder for anyone else who ends up in a similar situation that cell phone technology can help rescuers quickly pinpoint their location.
