Robert Linwood Clendening, age 83, of 32275 Clendening Lake Road, Freeport died at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2023 in Park Village Nursing Home, Dover.

He was born on his family’s farm on Route 2, Freeport on February 17, 1940 to the late John Black Clendening and Lena Irene Burrier Clendening.

Bob was a 1958 graduate of Freeport High School. He was a basketball player for the Lakeland Raiders.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and was discharged as a Sargent in 1968.

Bob was a farmer most of his lifetime. He also was employed by CONSOL Coal Company of Cadiz as a heavy equipment operator for five years before becoming a school bus driver for thirty years for the Harrison Hills City School District where he retired in 2012.

He attended the Freeport United Methodist Church. His passion was woodworking, making furniture and crafts.

His wife of 59 years, Nancy Lynn Michaels Clendening, survives. They were married February 23, 1964.

Also surviving are four children: Rob (Leah) Clendening of Mt. Vernon, Abbie (Shea) McCracken of New Bern, North Carolina, Chris (Dana) Clendening of Cincinnati, and Amanda (Bart) Busby of Bowerston; twelve grandchildren: Reese (Caira) Clendening, Drew (Kirsten) Clendening, Mitchell Clendening, Erin (Colin) Miller, Courtney (fiancé Brenden Manahan) McCracken, Kylie Clendening, Garrett Clendening, Ella Clendening, Benjamin Maran, Danielle Maran, Brandon Busby, and Micah Busby; six great-grandchildren: Sienna, Raife, Bella, James, Levi, and Charlotte Valentina; a sister, Rebecca Sue Boor of New Philadelphia; three nieces: LeeAnn, Shelby, Lori, and a nephew, Brad.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a brother, James Clendening.

Following Bob’s wishes he was cremated.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2023, in The Freeport Church on the Rock with Pastor Sandra Cappel and Bob’s grandson, Reese Clendening, officiating. Burial in Greenmont Union Cemetery, Freeport will take place at a later date.
