Roy Dale “Jim” Scott, 89, of New Philadelphia, Ohio, known and loved by many as half of “The Singing Scotts” was called to his heavenly home from his earthly residence on Thursday, August 29, 2024, with his loving family at his side, singing his favorite hymns and songs of praise. Born June 25, 1935 in Deersville, Ohio, he was a son of the late Loris and Louella Frances (Rose) Scott.

Jim grew up in the Deersville area and was a proud graduate of Uhrichsville High School’s class of 1953. He cherished great memories of his years spent playing on Uhrichsville’s championship football teams and remained close with many of his classmates throughout the rest of his life. He was especially pleased to be able to join in celebrating the 71st reunion of his class this summer.

A gifted mechanic – known for his ability to tear down and rebuild transmissions – he owned and operated Scott Pontiac and Oldsmobile on Center Street in Dennison for many years. All who knew Jim will remember him for his outgoing, generous nature, and his great love for serving others – both privately and in public life. He was a former member of the Claymont Board of Education and was among the founding board members of Buckeye Joint Vocational School. Jim had also been a mentor to many over the years whether as a small businessman helping others get their start or as a baseball coach.

On August 21, 1954, Jim married the former Mary Ella Murphy with whom he enjoyed nearly 66 years of marriage until her passing on December 1, 2020. They were blessed with four children, Carole “Vonne” (Tom) Cahaney, Jeffrey Scott, and Melinda (Brian) Maxwell who survive him, as well as a son, James Scott who passed in 2022, and his wife, Cindy, who survives; 10 grandchildren, Corrie (Cahaney) Johnson, Scott Cahaney, Brock Maxwell, Brent Scott, Jillian (Cahaney) Divan, Brandon Scott, Lauren Scott, Bradley Scott, Paige (Maxwell) Randolph, and Cody Scott; 11 great-grandchildren; many cherished nieces and nephews; and a host of dear friends. His sisters, Mary and Ann, and brothers, Bill and Bob, complete his family. Roy truly enjoyed the company and friendship of his many neighbors on Oxford Drive, and his family is grateful for the many kindnesses they extended over the years.

Above all else, Jim was a man of deep faith who loved the Lord and his family passionately. He spent many years in ministry, along with his wife, Mary, both of them having been ordained ministers who used their God given talents in His praise as song evangelists. They worked together in mission from Maine to Alaska, fearlessly working to spread the Gospel through revivals across the nation. Jim spent much of his life as a member of Uhrichsville Church of the Nazarene where he was saved and first called into ministry, and he had most recently attended NewPointe Community Church. Among Jim and Mary’s fondest memories were singing at Camp Kaphar (which he had helped to build) and traveling to the Holy Lands where they were able to sing in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Jim’s family will lead a funeral service in celebration of his life on Tuesday, September 3, at 1:00 p.m. in the R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. They will receive callers from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, prior to the service. He will be interred beside his beloved wife in Deersville-Patterson Union Cemetery in Deersville on a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ohio’s Hospice Foundation, 716 Commercial Ave. S.W., New Philadelphia, OH  44663.
