Roy S. Cherry, age 87, of Dover, Ohio, and a former Sherrodsville resident, died Friday morning, April 10, 2026 in the Ohio’s LifeCare Hospice Truman House at New Philadelphia.
He was born August 11, 1938 in his family home in Pandora, Putnam County, Ohio and was the son of the late Wayne and Betty (Roy) Cherry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pat Sherrick and a brother, Bradley Cherry.
Roy dedicated 38 years of his lifetime to the field of education, and his history is extensive. He served as a teacher and coach in these Ohio school districts, which includes Continental Local Schools in Continental, Liberty-Benton Local Schools in Findlay, and Spencerville Local Schools in Spencerville. He served as a teacher, principal and coach in Lima Perry Schools in Lima, and was the high school principal in Columbus Grove Schools in Columbus Grove. He managed districts as superintendent for Arcadia Local Schools in Arcadia, Buckeye Valley Local Schools in Delaware, Eastwood Local Schools in Pemberville, Waynesfield Local Schools in Waynesfield, and finally retired in 2000 after serving 11 years as the superintendent of Conotton Valley Union Local Schools at Bowerston. He was a member of the Powell Memorial United Methodist Church in Findlay. Roy pointed to the summers he spent on Atwood Lake with his pontoon boat as one of the high points of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Kay (Powell) Cherry of Dover, whom he married August 7, 1966, a son and grandson, Rick (Rhoda) Cherry and Hewitt Cherry of Land O Lakes, Florida.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M., Tuesday, April 14, 2026 in the Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville with Rev. Kenneth Ogg officiating. Calling hours will be held Tuesday form 1:00 P.M. until time of services at 3:00 in the funeral home. Graveside services will be observed at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 15, 2026 in the Maple Grove Cemetery located in Findlay, Ohio, where burial will follow.
