Gwen Rummell Reporting –
As the temperatures increase and the weather improves, more motorcyclists will be seen on the roadways.
Motorcycle Ohio, a division of the Ohio Traffic Safety Office, is raising awareness about motorcycle safety for National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May.
Ohio State Highway Patrol New Philadelphia Post Trooper Jen Makris says caution should be used by all vehicles.
“Whether you’re driving a motorcycle or motor vehicle, you can make the roads safer by being aware of your surroundings while driving. Look twice, and save a life.”
In 2023, 230 Ohioans were killed in motorcycle-related crashes, which is a 47% increase from five years ago. Speed remains the leading cause of crashes and most of the fatalities involved untrained riders.
Motorcycle Ohio is encouraging riders to wear proper protective gear with their “Saved by the Helmet” award. Along with recognition, riders receiving the award are given a replacement helmet.
