Mary Alice Reporting –

With Ohio’s bear population estimated between 50 to 100, safety tips are being issued by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office posted the awareness following a spotting, thanks to a trail camera, on June 1st.

Black bears are an endangered species in the state with attacks a rare occurrence, providing they are given space and are not cornered.

They are most active in the early morning and late in the evening.

Top tips, if spotting a black bear, is to remain calm and to not run, warn the bear by talking in a calm but firm voice, allow space and never make the bear feel trapped or threatened, and to exit the area by slowly backing away.
