Sara Margaret Brown died on January 10, 2024, at Oak Pointe Nursing Home in Baltic, OH after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Sara, formerly of Sugarcreek, had been a resident at Oak Pointe the last four years. A daughter of the late Margaret (Broadwater) and Darrell McIntyre, Sara was born on August 7, 1937, in West Union, West Virginia. She and Homer Squires Brown were married on May 27, 1955, and celebrated sixty-two years of marriage before his death in 2017.
Sara had a servant’s heart. She loved her three children and her husband and was actively involved in their lives. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a 4-H advisor, an active member and officer of Garaway Pirate Mothers, and a member of the Garaway Music Booster’s. She was the superintendent of the Sugarcreek Community Bible School when her children were young. As member of Sugarcreek United Methodist Church, she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She put her education on hold after the birth of her first child, but almost twenty years later, Sara started back to college at Kent State Branch in New Philadelphia to complete her degree in elementary education. Unbelievably at the age of thirty-six, she even spent two semesters taking classes on main campus in Kent, Ohio, and staying in the college dormitories. She went on to graduate with a degree in elementary education and taught at 4th and 5th grades at Dundee Elementary and Miller Avenue Elementary in the Garaway Local Schools.
Sara was active in the PTO at her children’s schools when they were young, and she continued being an active member of the PTO’s in the schools where she taught. She was a longtime member of the Pythian Sisters and Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Tuscarawas County Chapter of the Ohio Retired Teachers and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association.
