Mary Alice Reporting –

The New Philadelphia Veteran’s Coordinating Committee is inviting the community to honor veterans during a Saturday program.

In coordination with the VFW Post 1445, American Legion Post 139, and VVA Chapter 857, all United States Armed Forces will be honored on the court house square in New Philadelphia.

Starting at 11am, the quest speaker is Tuscarawas County Probate and Juvenile Court Judge Adam Wilgus, who served with the 174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment in the Ohio Army National Guard. Wilgus is also part of the New Philadelphia VFW’s Military Honor Team.

City school band students will present the National Anthem, Middle School students will do a traditional flag folding ceremony, and the High School Chorale will perform several patriotic songs.

Three rifle volleys will also be conducted along with Taps.

Following the service, the public is invited to the New Philadelphia VFW Post Canteen for the traditional Bean Soup Luncheon.  Following the VFW lunch, Post 1445 will hold a short ceremony to dedicate the new Chuck Moorehead Veterans Memorial Garden located on the Post grounds.  The Hometown Hero banners that were not able to be displayed in downtown New Philadelphia are displayed in the Garden.
