The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) is highlighting the efforts of school counselors for the first full week of February.

National School Counseling Week is an annual event sponsored by the ASCA to highlight the impact school counselors have on students.

Conotton Valley School Counselor Kelli Edwards says her job involves a lot of work with students from elementary age through high school.

“I think that school counselors kind of fill in a lot of gaps. While teachers have to teach classroom lessons and they also try to weave some live lessons in, school counselors can do everything in between that’s needed to help a student that’s maybe struggling with their lessons.”

The ASCA also supports school counselors’ efforts in helping students focus on social/emotional development along with academic and career goals.

Clinical Counselor Kari Galigher notes that licensed clinical counseling in schools can majorly help students.

“If we’re having any issues here, the kids can come to me directly with parental consent and I can do the work here, which is nice and convenient for the parents. It’s basically a free service to those who need it.”

The theme for 2024 is “School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused.”
