Mosquito spraying will occur on this Thursday following another positive human case of La Crosse virus and the first mosquito testing positive.

The Tuscarawas County Health Department was notified of the confirmations following mosquito sample testing.

The individual testing positive is a 62-year-old from Goshen Township. The first case reported earlier this month was a 66-year-old Uhrichsville resident.

The positive La Crosse mosquito sample was collected by TCHD staff on July 18 at Union Cemetery on Memorial Drive, Port Washington. The Health Department will conduct mosquito spraying in the Village of Port Washington and in Goshen Township from 8 pm to 11 pm on this Thursday. In the event of inclement weather, spraying will be postponed.

La Crosse is a viral disease spread to people by the bite of an infected Eastern tree hole mosquito. These insects are generally found in woodland/forested environments and are rare in open areas. They prefer to lay eggs in pools of water found in tree holes but will also lay eggs in man-made water-holding containers, particularly discarded tires.

Officials reminded individuals to take precautions and use insect repellent when outside and reduce breeding grounds by emptying standing water from containers, gutters, and other items.
