Sharon Lynn Gump, age 76, of 247 Cemetery Hill Road, Freeport died at Grant Medical Center in Columbus on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 2:49 a.m. from complications while awaiting heart valve surgery.

Born in Wheeling, West Virginia on February 28, 1948, she was the daughter of the late John Fomenko and Rose DeNardi Fomenko.

Sharon was a 1966 graduate of Smithfield High School and went on to earn a master’s degree in education from the University of Dayton. She retired from the Harrison Hills City School District in 2003 after 32 years of teaching high school English.

Sharon was married to Gary Allen Gump for 28 years. They were married June 21, 1969. Gary died in an automobile accident on September 21, 1997. Together they started Gump’s Greenhouse in Freeport in 1995, after his passing, Sharon stayed busy running the greenhouse until 2015.

A devoted member of the Freeport Presbyterian Church, Sharon previously taught Sunday School and served the church over the years as a Deacon and Elder. She enjoyed being involved with the Presbyterian Women’s Group traveling with them to the county home each Christmas season sharing music, cheer, and gifts. She was also a member of the Freeport Clark Memorial Library, Friends of the Library. Sharon was a very active member of the Four Seasons Garden Club in Freeport helping to keep Freeport’s flower beds looking great all summer. She also belonged to the Ohio Association of Retired Teachers. Currently she was a volunteer at Trinity Hospital Twin City where you could find her smiling face in the Gift Shop and Coffee Bar several times a month.

Sharon is survived by her two sons: Aaron (Katy) Gump of Las Cruces, New Mexico and Joe (Tommi Wheeler) Gump of West Chester; a sister, Barbara (George) Harrah of Smithfield; a brother, Jeff (Carol) Fomenko of Piney Fork; and six grandchildren: John, Luke, Adelle, Garrett, Taylor and Kyle.

Visitation will be held Sunday June 23, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Koch Funeral Home, 216 S High Street, Freeport. Services will be held Monday, June 24, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Dave Bryan officiating in the Freeport Presbyterian Church, 106 Pine Street, Freeport with Jane Hughes honoring Sharon with music on the pump organ. Burial will follow in Greenmont Union Cemetery, Freeport

In lieu of flowers, her sons have requested memorial donations in her memory to Trinity Twin City Coffee Bar/Gift Shop and the Harrison County Dog Pound.
