Gwen Rummell Reporting –

Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell was recently appointed to the Blue Ribbon Task Force by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.

The Blue Ribbon Task Force is comprised of Ohio law enforcement officials working to improve law enforcement training.

One major reason for the creation of the force, according to Sheriff Campbell, was making a reliable budget for training.

“The Attorney General put together a task force. First, he worked with the legislature and he secured some funding, at least for two years in a row. We’re hoping that the state will make that a part of the permanent funding source for law enforcement training.”

Campbell says another issue they will discuss is altering standards to be uniform throughout the state.

“The next step was to figure out a plan of how to get every law enforcement officer quality training that was relevant and the type of training that the community expects us to do.”

The task force will work to make training modern, even exploring the use of AI to create virtual de-escalation simulations.

Meetings will take place both online and in person as the task force develops plans for the future.
