On June 3, 2022, Shirley Ann Rock passed away peacefully at age 82 after a brief illness. Shirley was born January 22, 1940, in Witcher Creek, WV to the late Cecil Buttrick and Mary Elizabeth Hunley. Shirley married John D. Rock on April 23, 1965, and is now reunited with her husband of 54 years. Shirley was the proud mother of two children, and many people considered Shirley their neighborhood mom.

When Shirley’s children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. But even by the standards of the era, Shirley was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help. She regularly brought meals to the home of sick neighbors, and she always ensured that every child who crossed her threshold was safe, healthy, and happy.

Shirley was a member of the Streetsboro Church of God, and when they retired, they attended both CCCU and Wesley Community Chapel in Newcomerstown, Ohio.

Shirley is survived by her son, Jay (Sharon) Rock of Newcomerstown; daughter, Gwen (Gene) Baumgardner of Kimbolton; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly. Along with her parents and husband, Shirley is preceded in death by her sister, Joann Bondra; brother, Roger Buttrick; other loved family members.

Services for Shirley will be held on Thursday, June 9 at 1 PM at Addy Funeral Home in Newcomerstown. Visitation will take place from 11 AM-1 PM, prior to the service. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery in Kimbolton.
