Americans are changing their eating habits, and it may not be for the best.

According to the latest study, 90% of U.S. adults are eating one or more snacks a day. Summertime also means more snacking for American families as they navigate schedules, road trips and vacations.

Kimberly Galant is the Head of Innovation at Dole Packaged Foods and says that snacking can be a good thing, but simple is best.

“Looking for a product that has the fewest number of ingredients. Also, ingredients that I know and that I can pronounce, and then what to stay away from, artificial ingredients [and] processed sugars.”

Americans are busier than ever, turning to snacks as a convenient answer to nutrition, but studies show that snacking is accounted for nearly 22% of adults’ total daily calories, according to the National Institutes of Health. The NIH suggests limiting portion size, sticking to healthy, natural foods and avoiding sugary snacks and drinks.
