Mary Alice Reporting –

An initial smoke call was upgraded to a working structure fire Tuesday morning.

A residential home, in Dover, suffered smoke damage throughout the entire structure after a blaze broke out just before 8am.

Fire Captain Brooks Ross explains that a school crossing guard reported seeing smoke at the E. 4th Street home.

“Initially though, maybe, the attic was on fire because both the one-story and two-story sections had a lot of smoke coming off all the eaves, all the vents. Doing a 360, I could see fire in what ended up being the kitchen on the first floor.”

No people were home but two dogs were inside, with one being transported to a veterinarian clinic in unknown condition and the other died due to smoke inhalation.

Ross points out that the family will not be able to stay in the house.

“Fire damage is limited to the kitchen but the entire house has got severe smoke damage to it. We currently have all utilities shut off. The family will not be able to stay here right now.”

Responding in mutual included New Philadelphia and Bolivar fire departments, and Smith Ambulance. Dover fire’s investigator remained on scene to determine a cause.
