New Philadelphia Fire Department is celebrating 18 years of a smoke alarm collaboration with Lowe’s.

The home improvement store provides a kindergarten smoke detector program. Fire Prevention Captain Jim Sholtz says this allows the department to go into New Philadelphia school and teach about fire safety.

“It’s important to start young. We kind of start talking to them when they’re preschool, kindergartener about fire safety basics. It’s more age appropriate to just get them aware about the dangers of fire and really open up communication with their parents. As they get a little older, we go more in depth about fire safety.”

On December 24th, Lowe’s donated 156 smoke detectors to the New Philadelphia Fire Department to distribute to city residents.

“We keep those on hand and if someone stops by, we can give them one for free. If someone does not have the capabilities of installing the smoke detector, we would be more than happy to install the detector for them.”

Sholtz recommends installing working smoking detectors on all levels of a home. A carbon monoxide detector should be placed near bedrooms.
