Tuscarawas County leads the state when it comes to checked wild turkeys.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife says just over 11,000 birds have been tagged so far this spring season. The season opened in most counties on April 25th and the northeast zone opened on May 2nd.

The top 5 counties are Tuscarawas (326), Highland, Gallia, Adams, and Belmont. ODNR says it has issued more than 48,500 permits for the spring hunting opportunity.

The south zone, encompassing 83 counties, remains open until Sunday, May 24th with hunting allowed from 30 minutes before sunrise until sunset.
