As more online shopping is done, especially around the holidays, safety needs to be a priority.
Top scams include gift card scams with consumers urged to purchase the cards from a reputable source. Another major scam is package-tracking, which involves emails or texts alerting of a delay and information is needed by clicking a link.
Technology Expert Sarah Armstrong says as folks order items online and deal promotions ramps up, watch out for suspicious texts or emails.
“You might see emails of someone impersonating your bank or even someone you know and if they’re offering something too good to be true it probably is. I always like to hover over whatever link is in that email to see the full address and if someone is asking for your personal information that might be a good sign that it might be something suspicious.“
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Ohio ranked 26th nationally for fraud-related reports in 2023.
Armstrong says one prevention tool is two enact two-step verification for accounts.
“So, it’s not only a password but then you might get a notification on your phone as well.”
She also recommends keeping phone or computer software up to date.
