The lawyer who has overseen Tuscarawas County’s Court of Common Pleas for more than two decades is passing the torch.

Court administrator Elizabeth Stephenson is retiring from that role after Friday but plans to continue utilizing her legal expertise in other capacities.

“I’m going to stay active in the bar association. I’m going to hang onto some teaching that I do for the Supreme Court of Ohio, and two committee’s that I work on there.”

Stephenson celebrated 27 years on the job on July 1st, the same day she started training her replacement: local attorney Rachel Dunfee.

“And she is more than equipped to take over all my tasks.”

During Monday’s board meeting, the Tuscarawas County Commissioners presented Stephenson with a certificate recognizing her ‘remarkable service’ to the courts and community.

Stephenson has been involved with numerous boards and organizations including the united way of Tuscarawas County where she’s heading up the yearly fundraising campaign to benefit more than a dozen local health and human service programs.
