A Strasburg man is in jail following a six-hour standoff with Tuscarawas County Sheriff deputies.
Monday afternoon, at around 3:30pm, deputies responded to 26 Haswell Circle to serve a protection order on an individual at the apartment. Part of the order was to have a child turned over to the mother.
A release from Sheriff Orvis Campbell notes that Deputies arrived, knocked on the door, which was slammed shut. The male occupant began making calls stating he would harm himself and the 3-year-old daughter. During a FaceTime call, he was seen putting a handgun to the child’s head.
Captain Adam Fisher, a certified hostage negotiator, spoke on the phone with the subject and attempted to get him to free the toddler and come out. He refused.
Throughout the evening the subject spoke to individuals in his life. One was an attorney who told him to comply with law enforcement.
The man finally came out at about 9:30pm and he was taken into custody without incident. The child was secured. The protection order was served, and weapons were seized from inside the home.
The male remains jailed pending formal charges from the Tuscarawas County Prosecutor’s Office.
Deputies were assisted by the Strasburg Police Department and Ohio State Highway Patrol.
