Gwen Rummell Reporting –
The Village of Strasburg Council is no longer considering a proposed ban on feeding stray cats.
The ordinance would have made it a misdemeanor offense to feed stray cats or other wild animals on public property and within one hundred feet of a private residence. The goal behind the introduced ordinance was to reduce the amount of stray animals in the village.
Council reconsidered the issue following the attendance of many residents and animal welfare advocates at the January 2nd meeting.
“We’re trying to control them by having them fixed. They’re not here because they want to be. They’re here because somebody dumped them. They need to be treated as you would treat a pet.”
Leaders from the Tuscarawas County TNR Project have offered their stance, but say they will not help communities that criminalize feeding.
A work session is scheduled for next Wednesday at 7 pm to further discuss the situation.
