Firefighters in Strasburg knocked down a blaze Monday afternoon that caused what officials called a “fair amount of damage” at Sugarcreek Shavings.
Crews were called just before 4 p.m. to the 5500 block of Hilltop Drive Northwest, where the business manufactures and bags sawdust for livestock bedding and wood-pellet fuel.
Fire Chief Jason Ely says it appears the fire started when a spark from operating equipment ignited material near the facility’s silo and dust-collection system.
“On the back side of the building there was a fire up in the attic in the back wall and then on the outside there was a silo with a dust collector on the top, it had exploded.”
Departments from across the area responded, and firefighters were on scene for about four hours. Ely said he wasn’t expecting any rekindles once crews cleared the site.
“Getting a good view up in the attic before we left and everything on the outside I feel we got all the hotspots out. There wasn’t anything smoking or steaming when we left.”
No injuries were reported, and officials have not yet released a damage estimate or how long the fire may impact operations at Sugarcreek Shavings.
