Mary Alice Reporting – Another round of funding was secured to present graduating senior with scholarship dollars.
The Quaker Foundation began the program to assist New Philadelphia students with higher educational opportunities through college, vocational, and technical school scholarships.
Quaker Foundation member Jan McInturf explains the scholarship program began in 1993 with two scholarships totaling $2,000.
“This year, it’s 80 students, 188 scholarships, totaling $246 thousand dollars. We also give a way what’s called classroom grants. This year we gave away 46 classroom grants totaling over $20,000.”
Funds are raised through donations from alumni, families, and friends of the New Philadelphia school system.
In 2005, the Michael Briggs memorial Scholarship began and is fund by the Board of Education.
Scholarships are awarded to members of the NPHS senior class in areas of academic, leadership, vocational/technical, and other areas. For more information, go online to www.quakerfoundation.org.
