Nick McWilliams reporting – A Wednesday afternoon fire in Sugarcreek caused damage to an area business.

The Sugarcreek Fire Department was toned out around midday for reports of flames from the roof of Tubar Eureka Industries.

Assistant Chief Terry Burkhart says that the fire occurred during remediation work by the company’s staff.

“The company was in the process of removing a paint booth that they no longer use. And they were using a torch cutting steel bolts and metal out of the side of the building, and they think it must have gotten into the attic space.”

Baltic and Dover were also toned out after Sugarcreek arrived.

He notes that the fire was quickly under control and no injuries were reported.

Most of the time spent on scene was related to ensuring a rekindling would not occur.

“We had a lot of hand work, because we had multiple layers of rubber decking, metal roofing, insulation, and styrofoam. Just a variety of different layers of roofing that took time to cut through. Sawzalls, chainsaws, and hand tools. A lot of hand work.”

Burkhart says that damage was contained to the old paint shop area, which includes fire, smoke, and water damage.
