The pre-hospital blood transfusion program that the Sugarcreek Fire Department unveiled in May is now being put to use and saving lives.
Fire Captain Cody Shetler says the department recently, for the first time, administered a blood transfusion inside an ambulance on the way to the hospital for a victim in danger of bleeding to death.
“We were called for a patient that had suffered from a traumatic laceration to an artery to their arm.”
Shetler says the patient was later released from the hospital that same day with a good outcome.
Sugarcreek was the first community-based department in the state to launch a pre-hospital blood program.
