Sugarcreek firefighters say crews responded to a small gas leak in town Tuesday.

This was in the afternoon after a contractor struck an unmarked private line along Beachy Drive, says Assistant Chief Cody Shetler.

Shetler says the line served a single residence, and firefighters were able to quickly isolate the leak by shutting off the gas at the meter.

Officials initially feared up to ten homes could be impacted, but the situation was contained to just that one house. Shetler says there was no need for evacuations and no immediate danger to the public, although the road was temporarily closed as a precaution.

The call lasted about an hour, from just after noon until shortly after 1 p.m.

Responsibility for the damage will likely be handled by insurance, with the contractor expected to cover repairs.
