Tuscarawas County Health officials want to make sure everyone has a safe start to the new school year when it comes to travels.

Community relations director Jennifer Demuth says drivers should never try to speed up to get around a bus when its yellow flashers come on. Drivers need to remain stopped for a bus as long as its red flashers are on.

She says kids walking to school or bus stops also need to pay attention and keep their heads up, use sidewalks whenever possible, or walk on the edge of the lawn facing traffic, and use crosswalks to get to the other side of a street.

Demuth says kids should also look left-right-left for traffic and bikes before crossing any streets.
