With temperatures expected to reach the mid-90s — and the heat index climbing even higher — the Tuscarawas County Health Department is reminding residents to take precautions.

Community Relations Director Jennifer Demuth says one of the most important steps is staying hydrated throughout the day.

Demuth says high humidity makes it harder for the body to cool itself, which can be especially dangerous for people with chronic health conditions.

She notes residents can also take simple steps at home to keep indoor temperatures down.

At home, closing curtains and avoiding the oven can help keep indoor temperatures from rising.”

Overall, Demuth recommends staying inside when possible, drinking water regularly, and being careful when taking pets outside in the heat.
