Mary Alice Reporting – Youth will be at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds to participate in a driving “roadeo”.

The event, this Thursday, provides participants the chance to show their driving skills but also to educate about safety on the roads.

According to the CDC transportation safety’s page, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for US teens, as about 2,800 youth, ages 13 to 19, were killed and roughly 227,000 were injured in crash in 2020.

Safe Communities Coordinator Abbie Benton says that they work with local educational districts throughout the county.

“Schools then put together a team based on their students and their driving record, and kind of their position within the schools”

As part of the course, it will include maneuverability, parallel parking, and backing up skills.

Factors that contribute to teen drivers being at a higher risk include, inexperience, nighttime and weekend driving, not using seat belts, distracted driving, speeding, and driving while impaired.
