This is Claymont’s first year to host Girls with Pearls to help young students develop social skills, set goals, and make positive choices.
Intermediate School Principal Michele Henry says they’ve held Guys with Ties the past few years. Funding and timing finally aligned to bring the specialized program for the girls.
“The Uhrichsville Eagles was very generous with funding…so we’re thankful for them donating the money so we could have the program this year.”
Henry says they opened the lunchtime lessons to 4th and 5th graders.
“We asked each homeroom teacher to nominate two or three girls and the girls have been super excited about it, and the teachers involved have been helpful and excited about it as well.”
Teachers helped nominate 4th and 5th graders to be part of the lunchtime lessons, being taught by Middle School Counselor Susan Monticelli.
“All the lessons tie into basically a woman’s self-esteem which starts when they’re little girls. We’re going to be teaching them what kindness means, how to be grateful, and empowering because we know when we are strong women it’s our job to empower other women. Personally believe in my life that any kind of adversity or obstacle is an opportunity to turn into something positive, so I think it’s important to teach the girls at a younger age because if they can learn that it’ll be life changing for them.”
Henry says they would like to keep Girls with Pearls going, and the one for the boys, but funding is needed for the workbooks. Anyone interested in donating dollars can contact Henry at Claymont Intermediate.
