The Rev. Donald Dean Silverthorne, 91, of Newcomerstown, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2024, at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, in Canton. He was born August 20, 1932, in Newcomerstown to the late Orville and Hazel (Vierheller) Silverthorne. He was a 1950 graduate of Newcomerstown High School. He moved to Akron, OH where he worked as a policeman for Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. for 14 years.
He was saved May 15, 1965, at a gate house working for Firestone. Don attended Akron University then transferred to Akron Bible Institute, he graduated and received his Bachelor of Theology from Brainerd Theological Seminary. He was ordained by both the Baptist Bible Fellowship Association and the American Baptist Churches of the U.S.A. While going to school in Akron, Don trained under the leadership of Rev. Bill Denton of the Furnace Street Mission in Akron. Pastor Don as he was affectionally called, served the following churches: Mt Zion Baptist Church, Waynesburg, PA and Jefferson Baptist Church Jefferson, PA from November 1969 – July 1973. Harmony Baptist Church, New Castle, PA from August 1973 – September 1976. First Baptist Church of Jackson, OH from September 1976 – June 1986. First Baptist Church of Urbana, OH from June 1986-March 1989. First Baptist of Rosewood Heights Church, East Alton, IL from April 1989 – December 1994. First Baptist Church of West Lafayette, OH from December 1995 – December 2000. First Baptist Church, Coshocton, OH from January 2001 – October 2001. First Baptist Church, Newcomerstown, OH from June 2003 – September 2004.
Don’s wife, Shirley Carol (Patterson) Silverthorne preceded him in death. His children, Bob Silverthorne and Jennifer Christner; and his twin sister, Patricia Keffer, also preceded him in death. Don is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Riehl) McDorman; his children, Donald Dean “Chip” (Paige) Silverthorne, Jane Turnmire, Harley Laux; and several grandchildren.
Services for Pastor Don Silverthorne will be held on Monday, June 17, 2024, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Newcomerstown with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Newcomerstown. Visitation will be held Sunday, June 16, 2024 from 2 to 4 PM at Addy Funeral Home, Newcomerstown.
