Mary Alice Reporting –

At 11:46 Thursday morning, firefighters were dispatched to 4180 Broad Run Dairy Road for a reported structure fire.

Dover Fire Department Captain Brooks Ross notes that they along with New Philadelphia units were at a training exercise at Union Hospital when the call came in.

First arriving companies found a 100 by 50-foot single story wood frame barn heavily involved with fire. Due to heavy fire conditions and a partial collapse, defensive exterior operations were initiated.

“Barn with a lot of fire in the back and it was into the roof. It was a pole type building construction of sheet metal and those usually collapse pretty quick in fire. It had a mixture of some hay, equipment, and in the back, it had several goats, pigs, and stalls.”

Two goats perished in the fire; however, neighbors were able to evacuate the remaining animals prior to the arrival of firefighters.

The fire was contained to the original fire building. No other injuries have been reported.

Containment occurred in about 35 minutes, but crews remained on scene for over six hours for overhaul and final extinguishment.

A cause of the fire is under investigation.
