Nick McWilliams reporting – Work is underway to help plan for improvements to a major freeway interchange in New Philadelphia.

Engineering office Burgess and Niple from Columbus are conducting a traffic study related to the interchange of I-77 and U.S. 250.

Mayor Joel Day says that the initial findings were presented last week to Tuscarawas County Economic Development Corporation.

“The area they are studying is from the Stone Creek exit to North Dover exits on I-77, west of the interchange to Crooked Run Road and east to the West High and Bluebell Drive intersection.”

The intersection was identified as a “hot spot” which is leading to higher levels of congestion and some safety concerns.

Day reportedly is also requesting the study be extended to include the five points intersection further to the west.

Data collection and analysis is expected to be completed by March of next year, with recommendations then being given to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
