Mary Alice Reporting – The Dover Fire Department received two separate calls Sunday for a fire at Dover Chemical.
Captain Brooks Ross says the first call was at 5:20 a.m. from a security guard, who was unsure of the circumstances but was told to call the fire department.
Upon arrival, it was discovered that a building was not involved in the fire.
“AEP had recently put in some new power lines and a substation. One of the transformers on one of the poles was on fire. That was kind of a relief. At least it wasn’t one of the buildings or anything involving any of the chemicals.”
Ross explains that crews stood-by, allowing AEP to respond and take over. Several hours later, the department was contacted again by a passerby, who noticed the transformer was still burning.
“Those transformers are filled with oil and they were just letting it burn. On this particular pole, it has six different transformers on it. They’re almost the size of a 55-gallon drum and the one that was on fire was about 90-feet in the air.”
Dover firefighters responded again at 11:30am after AEP called to ask for assistance in putting out the blaze, as their equipment was not working.
The business was without power for some time with no residential homes impacted.
