Mary Alice Reporting –

There will be three elections for some this year, the primary, a special election for a congressional district, and the general election.

The final date to register to vote in the March 19th primary and Special Election Congressional Primary is on Tuesday, February 20th.

Tuscarawas County Board of Elections Director Gail Garbrandt says this is the time to register or update information.

“If you have moved since the November general election, you need to come see us or fill out an update form and get it to us. We are accepting absentee ballot applications. They can send those into us at any time.”

Those in the congressional 6th District, which covers the eastern portion of Ohio, from Youngstown down to Marietta, including counties of Carroll, Harrison, and the eastern half of Tuscarawas, will be the only ones to see the Special Election Congressional Primary. They will also vote in a third election on June 11th to fill the seat vacated by Bill Johnson. Two democrats and three republicans are vying for the spot.

The primary election decides which contested party member moves to the November general election.

A larger turnout is expected since it’s a presidential election year, but seats up also include Ohio’s US Senator, 51st House of Representatives, a tax renewals for Strasburg and Newcomerstown Exempted Village School District.

More details on the election, including online registration, can be found at www.boe.ohio.gov/tuscarawas.
