The need is increasing to ensure Tuscarawas County children do not go hungry and TUFF Bags says they continue to need volunteers.
During the 2024-25 school term, just over 80,000 bags were packed and delivered to participating schools, says Director Lisa Walker.
“If they qualify for free and reduced lunch they automatically qualify for our program but there are a lot of students who are food insecure that don’t necessarily meet the income guidelines and those children are identified through their teachers, principals, aides. We ended the school year serving over 1,900 kids every week. That is for sure the most we’ve ever done since I’ve been involved since 2019, so each year we’ve seen a pretty significant increase.”
TUFF Bags are in the middle of their summer meal program and are still in need of packing volunteers.
“We are year-round. You can go to our website or our Facebook page and there are links to our volunteer website that has all of our dates and availability.”
The online packing date schedule has dates available through May 2026. The volunteer sign-up link can be found on the TUFF Bags website.
