Nick McWilliams reporting – The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has awarded nearly $25,000 to the Tuscarawas County Health Department.

The grant is intended for the department’s Mosquito Control Program and will be used for testing, spraying, and other control measures.

The health department is already working towards setting up traps in area hotspots and breeding grounds to test for West Nile Virus, which first made its arrival in the United States in 1999.

The county is planning on larviciding and adulticiding throughout the summer to curtail populations.

According to a release, officials have used more environmentally friendly products in recent years, and plan to continue the practice, which they say has been effective in recent years.

Residents can help by removing standing water which is a common breeding ground for the winged insects.

Information about the control program and a spraying schedule can be found by dialing (330) 343-5550, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
