Mary Alice Reporting – An inaugural induction ceremony is set for this Friday to recognize sports accomplishments in Tuscarawas County.

The Sports Hall of Fame was created to honor individuals prominent in the history of athletics.

Member Connie Evans explains the idea to create the Hall of Fame came about when she, Gill, and Tom Farbizo were part of the Dover Library’s Sports Book Club.

“Once we got started reading books, discussing things, we realized that most of the counties that border us had sports hall of fames. So we decide to take a look and do some research and we decided to put in motion a plan to create our own for our county.”

The first ceremony tomorrow will be at Dover High School Auditorium, says HOF board member Jim Gill, with tickets $5 per person and paid at the door.

“We wanted to have an impactful large class, so the deceased member’s teams and organizations will be Friday. Doors open at 5:30 pm the event starts at 7pm. Now that’s you’re thinking Cy Young, Woody Hayes, some of those iconic ones [but] a bunch of other ones that you may not realize had a very lasting and great sports careers.”

A second event, on Saturday, June 18th, will honor living inductees at dinner and then a ceremony at Buckeye Career Center. Tickets are $25.
