The Tuscarawas County Commissioners supported Red Ribbon Week following a Wednesday presentation from Youth2Youth.

The drug-free awareness week runs from October 23rd through the 30th and a proclamation passed unanimously after it’s reading by Clerk Rhonda Jordan.

“The Tuscarawas County Board of Commissioner commits it support to ensure the success of the Red Ribbon campaign making a visible statement that we are strongly committed to a drug free state.”

Y2Y Advisor Sierra Schweitzer explained that they get participating students from Claymont, Tuscarawas Central Catholic, and Strasburg to celebrate the week through activities to raise awareness on the dangers of youth drug use.

“Hanging posters regarding drug preventions, videos displayed in front of the schools regarding Red Ribbon week, creative theme days and coordinate fun and impactful prevention activities, decorating classroom doors within the middle and high schools, and share local prevention, intervention, and treatment resources within the community.”

TCC Junior Dylan Dumermuth pointed out that the 2024 national campaign theme is Life is a Movie, Live Drug Free.

“This year’s theme is a reminder that everyday American’s make daily contributions to their communities by living drug free. [The] theme was chosen this year because it encourages us to do our individual parts to keep our communities safe, healthy, and drug free. The theme encourages everyone to use their voice to make a difference.”

Prior to a unanimous vote, Commissioner’s Chris Abbuhl, Kristen Zemis, and Greg Ress acknowledged the work that the Y2Y students put in each year to raise awareness and be positive role models.
