Mary Alice Reporting –

A league for those with special needs started in 2010 with nine players and as opening day approaches, the local Challenger Baseball league has 77.

On opening day, this Saturday at 1pm, at Dover Park, the event starts with a player parade with each name being announced.

Tuscarawas County Challenger Baseball Board President Jennifer Flaherty explains that the team is all inclusive.

“We play two innings, we don’t keep any score, everybody gets to bat, we don’t have any outs, and everybody plays the field. We buy and get equipment for the children and adults [based on] what they need.”

Flaherty invites community members to come out and cheer on the players and enjoy the family-friendly event.

“We love for groups to come out and cheer us on and make posters. The kids love to see people up in the stands with posters cheering them on and things like that.”

She notes that they are able to purchase any needed equipment thanks to community donations and sponsorships.
