Gwen Rummell Reporting –

The Tuscarawas County Health Department partnered with the Sheriff’s Office and Empower Tusc to complete 57 compliance checks at tobacco retailers.

Out of the 57 checks completed, 51 retailers passed and did not sell to an underage purchaser. TCHD Public Health Educator Lakyn Craig says this number is close to the same as past checks.

“89% is just about on par for Tuscarawas County compared to previous years. Last year, we were at a 90% compliance rate so we have just slightly decreased from last year.”

All retailers that passed the compliance check will receive a packet of educational materials in the mail, while those who failed had theirs delivered in-person by representatives from the Health Department and Sheriff’s Office.

Two locations that failed were within half a mile of a school, making access to youth greater. Craig adds that the checks help prevent adolescents from becoming addicted.

“According to the Ohio Department of Health, about 95% of adult smokers begin before they turn 21 so Tobacco 21 is an important approach to reduce youth tobacco use so that they don’t start using those products as young.”
