Gwen Rummell Reporting –

The Tuscarawas County Dog Pound released their report for February 2024.

The Pound experienced another busy month with 71 canines taken in. This number raises the yearly total to 118.

Facility and Adoption Specialist Beth Lewis notes the first two months of the year are usually slow, so these numbers are concerning.

“Unfortunately in the month of February, we’ve seen a whole lot of “oops my dog had puppies.” There are a couple of low-cost spay and neuter options up in Stark County. At this point in time, in the world that we live in, [there’s] really no excuse to allow your dog to accidentally have puppies.”

Lewis adds that the pound can provide information regarding pet food and low-cost spay/neuter.

Another issue the dog pound sees is out-of-date or inaccurate information on dog tags and microchips.

“People don’t think to update them because you don’t look at them every day. You know, people move or change their phone numbers. Sometimes they just don’t register them at all or some people just don’t know that the dog that they purchased is chipped.”

A total of 39 stray dogs were collected along with 32 surrenders. 18 found dogs were redeemed, 9 adopted, and 31 sent to rescue.
